Today we were up against fairly new side having only been put together few years prior in Wigan Road, this was in the first round of the Lancashire Amateur Cup. With a lot of players missing it gave us the chance to bring some lads in that were chomping at the bit to impress and show what they could do, however we were lacking cover in vital areas and it proved costly in the end. We started the game brightly, Wigglesworth was making there left side work hard with his relentless runs from full back, Wigan looked to be tiring badly and we were only 15mins in, Wigan made a great decision to switch their wide players over which did the trick as they put a more athletic player up against Wigglesworth who was able to track his runs. Wigan had some half chances in the first half but we were resilient at the back despite having Onyeugba naturally a striker playing in Centre Back. The first half came to a close and we came in 0-0. Half time we regrouped, made a couple of changes and there was a resurgence and we started to get a grip on the game but on 60mins after Onyeugba pulled up with cramp and had to be replaced the wheels started to come off as we were forced to then start moving a lot of players out of position due to the central area lack of cover and we paid the price as a quick fire 7 minutes resulted in 2 goals for Wigan. We rallied towards the end and should have pulled one back only for the linesman to have judged Olori to be in an offside position, a decision made probably 10yrds behind play and the highlights on the VEO clearly show a lovely through ball from Ingle into Olori who was onside and finished to the side of the keeper but luck was on Wigan's side and the score remained 2-0 and the final whistle blown and we bow out of the Lancashire County Cup at the first hurdle for the second season in a row. We are hoping for a much better outcome next week as we start our cup journey in the Manchester County Cup.
